Pacific Rim review

Boyfriend and I went to see Pacific Rim the other night. Not even five minutes in, he turned to me and whispered, “This is terrible.”

Don’t let his cynicism dismay you! However, he and I can agree that the movie was incredibly rich and flavorful…but the flavor was all cheese. I think this was partly intentional, and while he hated the movie, I found it entertaining if you could accept that it was going to continue to be corny. If you take Pacific Rim at face value, it’s original, aesthetically engaging, and full of awesome gigantic dimension-travelling alien sea monsters.

Since this is a beauty blog, I want to talk about the female lead character, Mako Mori. Mako is a young Japanese woman who is very bright and whose dream is to be a pilot. She is such an AWESOME role model for young girls. Guillermo Del Toro, who co-wrote and directed the film, did a fantastic job making her a character of substance and not just a sex object, like so many female action heroes are. I was really pleased to see that Mako was fully clothed, and praised for her intelligence and ambition.

She was also physically beautiful, but kept a very natural look. She wore a slight amount of subtle blush, a matte, natural rose color on her lips, a thin line of black eyeliner, and possessed beautifully groomed and filled-in brows. Her natural beauty was enhanced without making her look garish.

All in all, the movie is worth a see but you can’t go into the theater expecting anything too intellectually-stimulating. If you go, keep a look out for Mako’s awesome makeup look.
